Adult Education Guidance Initiative

Cork Education & Training Board’s Adult Guidance Service

The aim of  Cork Education & Training Board’s Adult Guidance Service is to facilitate learners to make informed decisions about accessing education and training, transferring within and progressing from Cork ETB.

The focus of the guidance service is to offer educational and career guidance counselling, to second chance learners, whose previous lack of learning opportunities have been a barrier to progression through the education levels.

Services Offered to Learners

The guidance service offers free, impartial, confidential, information, advice and guidance on educational options to the following people:

  • Current ETB adult learners who do not have existing access to guidance
  • Unemployed adults who want to up skill or retrain, but whose qualifications are less than QQI Level 6

The service is not available to people in full-time employment or third level applicants/graduates.

Information

AEGISthMall
22 South Mall

The drop in service in South Mall accommodates people with information and advice on education, careers and supports available to adults in the city including information on community education and literacy programmes. Each individual receives personal assistance from the Information Officer or will be referred to a Guidance Counsellor. When someone engages with the Information Officer they can be assured that the careers library and databases are up-to-date and continually tailored to the needs of the local clients. Information from the guidance service is a process of engagement and is often the beginning of the guidance journey.

Clients can also access information by phone, email or in real time on courses and events by becoming a ‘Fan’ of our Facebook page facebook-icon

Guidance

The interventions used reflect the social, psychological, educational and economic aspects of the client’s situation. The approach is holistic; the client is met with respect and empathy. Group guidance is provided to a variety of groups including community organisations and agencies, on an outreach basis and is tailor made to the needs of the group. Guidance is provided on a one-to-one basis, where an individual is seen for approximately an hour initially in order to consider options.

This includes:

  • Time for the client to tell their story while giving space for articulating ambitions, goals and achievements
  • A discussion about educational options ranging from literacy tuition to community education, further education or third level
  • The practical exercise of matching educational choices to future careers
  • Developing a career plan
